Car smashes into block of flats on Streatham High Road
A car smashed through railings and embedded itself in the corner of a block of flats on Streatham High Road late on Saturday evening. All three emergency services attended the incident. No serious injuries were reported at the scene.
The crash happened some time between 10 and 10.30pm, according to residents of the flats at the corner of the High Road and Lewin Road.
Bystanders reported that the driver had been arrested on the scene, but police officers present would not confirm that or deny it. The driver had been taken to hospital “as procedure”, they said.
The Mercedes, a 2018 diesel with a private registration plate, came to rest nose-down against the building, at an angle that suggested it had left the roadway and passed narrowly between a lamppost, a digital road sign and other street furniture before impact.
Firefighters from Norbury and Croydon attended to assess the condition of the car and the structure of the building.
